I have Witnessed

I have witnessed Soviet Culture, Fall of Berlin Wall, Secret Soviet Cities, Apartheid in South Africa, tensions in Israel as well as Arab-Israeli life, the workings of the mafia and riots in India. I have witnessed prejudice and discrimination, as well as how social class creates unnecessary advantage for some. I have been invited to government feedback sessions and dialogues.

I have Worked

I have worked with intellectually disabled, and students with severe mental disability who require shock treatment. I have worked with geniuses from Mensa, and the intellectually bright who do not need a tutor but some one to have deep conversations with. I have worked to shape the minds of juvenile delinquents, drug addicts and criminals through direct education and social work. Prior to the education industry, I was enjoying marketing and business development in the consumer electronics and computer industry.

The Experience

These experiences have given me a perspective which very few people have. I deliver these perspectives to students and teach them how to analyse and be critical. I teach students to be aware, be able to make cogent arguments and plan their future.

TESTIMONIALS

I have learned quite a bit from Mr.Jit in a short span of 2 weeks and I can already see changes in how I write and approach the compre paper. Your effort and teaching style makes the tuition value for money. Its a little ex, but you are a pro, even more so than my teachers in school. Thanks Mr.Jit. I did good for my promo’s.

Your patience and warmth is fabulous. My son can be stubborn at times, yet you always managed to get him engaged in learning. He now engages us with his GP work and we are learning at the same time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

1. Do you teach at home or at a centre?

Lessons are all online, in a 1:1 setting.

2. What is your experience?

I have taught locally and internationally general paper and sociology since 1996. From 2001-2006 I taught in Boston, Massachusetts. Since returning to Singapore in 2007 I have been a full-time tutor specializing in General Paper. For a brief period I was Training Manager for a tuition franchise. I have a degree in business and a degree in psychology. I also have professional certifications in teaching, training, curriculum design and assessment. In 2014 I published a book in collaboration with Educational Publishing House (EPH), the publishing arm of Popular Bookstore. In 2015, GP Issues was the best selling academic book in Singapore. GP Issues was still the best selling book in 2020.

3. Why should I select you as a tutor?
Students tell me that I am passionate about teaching. They say, that makes all the difference in how they see General Paper. Besides my passion and experience, I have a structured methodology to teaching that empowers students to deal with the subject. I cover structure and content knowledge not dealt with in schools. I have been invited to Indonesia, Mauritius, Malaysia and Thailand to conduct Gp workshops for students and teachers.
4. Can I have a trial lesson?
Honestly, this is one question that I liken to scratching a black board. I do not give trial lessons mainly because I have confidence in my teaching methodology and materials. You will not find better notes and in-depth critical thinking anywhere. So, give my 20+ years of teaching experience a chance by signing up for a minimum of 4 lessons. If you want, you can contact old students to get first hand info about my teaching style, notes, skills, content and humour.
5. If you are so good, do you guarantee that I will get an A or B for GP?
Getting an A or B in GP is dependent on a few factors. One, your language level and ability. Two, how critically you see the issues before you. The Cambridge examiners view students that take the General Paper as matured individuals who have a good command of the English language and can be critical in their outlook to present strong arguments. That said, I can help you become critical and put forth cogent arguments, but I can only to a limited basis help you with language and grammar. On average a J2 student has 40 weeks to the GP exam. There is a lot of material to cover. Incorporating grammar in a 40 lesson program is not feasible. If your language abilities are stellar, and you follow my direction, diligently completing all work assigned, there is no doubt that you can score well, but I cannot guarantee an A or B. For one, the school marking system is vastly different from Cambridge, and secondly, moderation and other factors may prevent a high grade. But there are certain qualities required for a A-grade, which I would be most happy to share with you.
6. Who else teaches the classes
All classes are taught by Jit Sharma.
7. How long is each class?

Each class is 1.5 hours. I do go over time by 10-15 minutes quite regularly.

8. How many students per class?

Each class is in 1:1 setting. Time is dedicated to teaching specifically what the student needs.

9. Do you give homework?
There are 2 pieces of homework each week.
10. Do you mark homework and give feedback?

All homework is marked and returned to students. Feedback is always given and areas of improvement discussed.

11. Are there any mock exams?
Yes there are mock exams conducted for mid-year and EOY exams.
12. What is your teaching style?

Due to time constraints, I take a didactic form of teaching, meaning I direct every activity. GP should best be explored and contemplated, but since students would have already done that in school, I focus on dealing with skills and content that are essential in passing and getting a good grade for GP. I incorporate Bloom’s Taxonomy in my teaching and use other teaching methodologies to ensure that the student understands the content, and has the skills to attempt the paper. We do a lot of application exercises in class.

13. Can you guarantee an A grade for GP?
No I cannot guarantee. You need to be consistent in your work to get an A. You also need to read A-grade material in order to write A-grade material. What I can guarantee is that you will not get better insights, notes, tips and practices a n y place e l s e. Confirm-Chop!
14. What happens when a student cannot attend a class?

Make-up is to be taken within the week. If you can’t attend the make-up class, you lose the fee for that session.

15. What topics do you cover?
I cover Sci & Tech, Govt & Politics, Globalisation, Media, Environment, Ageing, Family, Poverty, Crime & Punishment, Discrimination, Youth, Sports, Art, Philosophy, Singapore related topics and everything that is needed to be prepared for the exam, and more!
16. Do you spot questions?
I do not spot questions for GP. But I do focus on certain topical areas that appear for exams.
17. You seem to be a senior teacher, but your fees are so low. How come?
I believe that tuition fees should be reasonable and affordable. I am a teacher. I am not in the slaughtering business. You want to pay me more, I don’t mind.
18. How old are you?

In September of 2021, I will be 54. (Gifts, cards, gold and cash are welcome).

19. Why don't you call yourself the Best GP Tutor?
Accolades are not for me to give myself. Whether I am good or not, you can read the testimonials and decide for yourself. I am dedicated to my craft. I also do not need to pay SPH to run advertorials on me and subtly induce phrases that give the impression that one is so out of this world. Have a few classes and decide for yourself if I am best or not.
